Rocinha is the largest favela (urbanized slum) in Rio de Janeiro. The range of people inhabiting this area is immensely diverse. The lodgings they live in in this densely populated area are located on a very steep hill and are only accessible by foot.
Although Brazilian favelas are extremely poor and largely controlled by drug dealers, 95% of favela residents are law-abiding, upstanding citizens with honest jobs. Rocinha has a well developed infrastructure and hundreds of businesses such as banks, medicine stores, kindergartens, hairdressers, bars and a lot more.
